The shape of the place

The Texas Panhandle is the northernmost region of the state, bordered by New Mexico on the west and Oklahoma on the north and east. West of the Caprock Escarpment the surface of the Llano Estacado is rather flat. South of Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the United States, cuts through. North of Amarillo lies Lake Meredith. Lake Meredith and the Ogallala Aquifer are the primary sources of fresh water in this semi-arid High Plains region. I-40 passes through the Panhandle and Amarillo. Amarillo is the most populous city in the Panhandle and comprises nearly half of its population.

Our county grouping includes Potter, Randall, Moore, Hutchinson, Gray, Hansford, Ochiltree, Dallam, Deaf Smith, Castro, Parmer, Swisher, Hale and Childress. It is a general list and membership is approximate.

Two scales of business

There is the Amarillo scale: restaurants, medical offices, contractors, dealerships, metal and welding shops and retailers who serve a metro area. And there is the small-town scale: a single hardware store, diner or repair shop that serves a county where people drive a long way to buy anything else. The first faces competition and growth costs. The second faces thin customer counts and long supply lines.

Farm and ranch customers, and the lag they create

Much of the rural economy rests on farm and ranch customers, and many small suppliers sell to them on account. Income for those customers arrives when crops or animals are sold. The supplier waits. A farm equipment repair shop that is owed money by a dozen accounts at the end of a dry summer can have lots of revenue on paper and not enough cash for parts.

  • Seasonal pressure: input purchases come before harvest.
  • Weather risk: drought can delay farm customers' payments.
  • Water: irrigation depends on the Ogallala Aquifer, so costs and decisions can shift over time.

Roadside and travel businesses

Because I-40 crosses the region, some businesses depend on passing traffic: food, fuel-adjacent retail, lodging and repair. Their sales move with travel season and weather. A closed road is a lost day, and the lease and wages do not shrink. Keeping a few weeks of fixed costs in reserve is simple advice that is hard to follow, and working capital is one way to cover a gap while the reserve is rebuilt.

A practical example

For illustration, with round numbers and not our terms: a welding shop in the Amarillo area lands a fabrication order. It needs $35,000 in steel, a hired helper and a rented lift for six weeks, and the customer pays net 45. The work is worth doing only if the shop can finance those weeks. Funding makes sense if the order has a signed price that covers costs; it does not if the price was a guess.

To apply

Funding runs from $25,000 to $5,000,000, and can be funded in as little as 24 hours once approved. The application takes about 5 minutes and sole proprietors can apply. When you know the job and the amount it needs, start the application.
