A binational region

El Paso-Juarez, also called Juarez-El Paso or Paso del Norte, is a transborder agglomeration on the border between Mexico and the United States. It is centered on two large cities, El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, and nearby Las Cruces, New Mexico, is sometimes included. The profile we read says the region has over 2.4 million people and is the second-largest conurbation on the U.S.-Mexico border, after San Diego-Tijuana.

Our page groups seven Texas counties: Brewster, Culberson, El Paso, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Presidio and Terrell. We group counties into regions for convenience; the groupings follow public regional definitions and are not official state regions. El Paso County is the center of the grouping. Smaller border communities such as Socorro, Horizon City and San Elizario sit close to El Paso.

Trade, freight and the retail that follows

A border region builds an economy around crossings: freight and logistics, warehousing, customs-related services, and the retail and food businesses that serve people on both sides. Volume rises and falls with conditions at the crossings and on both sides of the river, and a business cannot control any of them.

A trucking broker, a warehouse operator or a produce handler pays for storage, labor and handling before the customer pays. A restaurant or retailer stocks for traffic it can only estimate. When traffic dips, fixed costs stay; when it surges, stock and shifts must be added before revenue arrives.

Three ways the float shows up

Freight and logistics

Drivers, fuel and handling fees come first; payment follows delivery and invoicing. We make no promise of funding for any specific carrier or industry.

Warehousing

Lease, labor, forklifts and racking are fixed. Volume is not. For illustration, a warehouse with $45,000 in monthly costs and a slow six-week stretch can run short even in a good year.

Retail and food

Stock and staffing follow customers, and customers follow crossings, holidays and the calendar on both sides of the river.

Distance and isolation

Far West Texas is a large, thinly connected area. Towns are far apart, supplies come from long distances, and a breakdown of a vehicle or a machine can take days to fix. Owners in sparse markets often keep more inventory and spare parts on hand than owners in denser ones, which ties up cash.

That cash cost is easy to forget. A repair shop that stocks $20,000 of parts so it never has to wait on a shipment is paying for convenience up front. A funded amount can cover that stock without draining the daily account.

Before you apply

  1. Total your monthly fixed costs.
  2. Estimate the number of days between paying and being paid.
  3. Multiply the daily cost of operating by those days to see the float.
  4. Request an amount tied to that figure, not a round number.
