Lufkin grew up around a railroad stop and a lumber company. A century on, its businesses still run on timing, and a low score does not end an application.

"I need to pay ahead to get the price, and my account is thin this month."
"I have a good business and a bad score. Is it over?" It is not over. You can apply with a damaged credit history, and sole proprietors can apply.
Lufkin is the largest city in Angelina County and its county seat, in Deep East Texas about 60 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana state line. It was founded in 1884, named for Abraham P. Lufkin, and originally served as a stop on the Houston, East and West Texas Railway. Three businessmen founded the Angelina Lumber Company, which led to much of the economic prosperity the city later enjoyed. The 2020 census counted 34,143 residents.
Lufkin's businesses today include restaurants, trades, healthcare practices, retail and service firms. They are not a single industry, so there is no single seasonal pattern. What they share is a common cash-flow shape: costs arrive on a fixed calendar, and customers, insurers and contractors pay on theirs.
| Business | Where the calendar splits |
|---|---|
| Medical or dental practice | Payroll is weekly or biweekly; insurer payments come weeks later |
| Trade contractor | Materials and crew first, customer payment after the job |
| Restaurant | Food and labor weekly; sales vary day to day |
| Retail shop | Inventory bought ahead; foot traffic uneven |
Lufkin began as a stop on a railroad line, and railroads are a good picture of working capital: goods and money move on different clocks. The goods leave now and the payment arrives later. A business that sells on terms lives with that gap every month, and it is the gap, not the business, that tends to damage a score.
A Lufkin dental practice replaces a chair and a compressor for $18,000 and hires a second hygienist. Insurer payments arrive weeks after each visit, so for about two months the practice has paid more than it has collected. The owner covers payroll from a personal card and the score slips. The figures are round and invented and are not our terms. They show why a profitable practice can have a poor score.
The same pattern applies to a trade contractor waiting on a draw or a restaurant adding a second shift.
Funding runs from $25,000 to $5,000,000. The application takes about five minutes, and funding can arrive in as little as 24 hours once available. We cannot predict what an offer will look like; a lower score can mean a smaller or more expensive one, so read every offer to the end.
