A ranch and railroad town on US 77

Kingsville is the county seat of Kleberg County in southern Texas, on the U.S. Route 77 corridor between Corpus Christi and Harlingen. It is the principal city of the Kingsville Micropolitan Statistical Area and part of the Corpus Christi-Kingsville Combined Statistical Area. The 2020 census counted 25,402 residents. The city was named for Richard King and founded to provide infrastructure for the adjacent King Ranch and to serve as the headquarters of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway.

A South Texas economy tied to land and weather

Kingsville is in southern Texas, on the highway between Corpus Christi and Harlingen, and its businesses feel both the land and the weather. Ranch and agricultural suppliers, equipment and repair shops, highway services and local retail all share one calendar: busy when work is steady, and thin when drought, flood or a storm interrupts it.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. A storm that misses Kingsville directly can still disrupt supply, travel and customers across the region.

For illustration only: a farm-and-ranch supply store

A Kingsville supply store buys $60,000 of feed, fencing and parts before a busy period and sells much of it on thirty-day terms to local customers. Some pay in two weeks, some in two months. The store pays its own suppliers on a fixed schedule, so in a slow-collection month it falls behind.

That kind of timing problem is what working capital can cover, if the store has the margin to carry the cost of the money.

A small-city lesson on credit

In a town this size, many customers are neighbors. Owners extend terms because of relationships, and they take longer to collect. That is generous and also costly. When suppliers want payment on schedule, the owner covers the difference. The credit report records the gap and not the reason for it.

Storm and drought planning

Owners here plan for events that can interrupt income without warning. A short written list helps: which bills are due in the next sixty days, which customers owe money, and what you would do if sales dropped by a quarter for two months. Writing it clarifies how big a gap you would need to cover.
